The Warsangeli clan is one of the largest clans in northeastern Somalia. The clan is a sub-clan of the Darod and is divided into several sub-clans, including Awlade Isse, Geri Kombe, and Ali Sugule. The Warsangeli originated from Yemen and migrated to Somalia in the 12th century.
The clan is primarily pastoralist and many members are involved in livestock trade and agriculture. The Warsangeli also have a long maritime tradition and have historically been involved in fishing and naval trade.
Politically, the Warsangeli clan is influential in the autonomous regions of Puntland and Somaliland. The clan played a significant role in the formation of Puntland in 1998 and has been involved in various peace negotiations between the Somali government and rebels.
There have been conflicts between the Warsangeli and other clans in the region, particularly the Majerteen and Dhulbahante clans. However, there have also been efforts to reconcile and cooperate for the greater benefit of the region.
